Guatemala has served as benchmarks in my life over the last six years that bookend many milestones. Each year I return to see the same kiddos deep in the valley. If we know anything about valleys, is that it is the greatest route Shepherds take their sheep on their journey to the mountaintop. In the valley, it has the gentlest grade, is well watered, and has the richest feed and best forage along the way. To me, Guatemala has greeted me with those things in my life- gentle interactions, refreshed soul, and sincere nourishment deep in my heart along my own journey in my life. Six years of this trip reminds me that we have a Shepherd who just adores His flock and grants us with peace in the midst of great chaos.
Going on this trip for six years could easily place myself in complacency of showing up and doing the same thing each year. To our teams’ surprise, we had to roll with the punches of change of plans and agendas. I found myself more available to those around me and unexpected conversations met me through the day. I had more conversations with parents and translators with the simple attitude of “showing up.” I left my agenda at the door and allowed the simplicity of lingering to greet my day.
This trip was something special. My hope that these photos speak louder than any words I could say. I invite you into just a piece of my heart. Leaving this beloved village was difficult as I am not confident in when I will return. But my eagerness for Heaven is more than ever as I await the day that I can reunite with my dear friends. Forever grateful for my church, this trip and all of the people I get to share it with.
